about

rizà (translated to ‘roots’, ‘foothills’) is the trio of Themistoklis Karpodinis, Costinho (Costis Zouliatis) and Petros Lamprides, who attempt a new approach of Greek traditional and folk music, with unadorned musical arrangements, all tuned in an acoustic mood; reflecting a range of musical references that reach the aesthetics of ECM albums and Mediterranean jazz; embracing field recordings and the principles of electronic music. Rather than deliberately experimenting, they look upon the concept of evolution as an inherent element of tradition.

Their self-titled debut album features nine old traditional folk songs from Greece – mainly originated from the islands’ regions (Cyclades, Dodecanese, Evia, Aegina, Lesvos) and the coast of Asia Minor. In between, come the words of Greek classic authors the likes of Alexandros Papadiamantis and Yiannis Skaribas, the villagers’ voices from Naoussa of Paros, the immigrants at Ellis Island and overtones of John Coltrane. All tunes are sung in original language, neither adapted nor deviating from the traditional melodies. There are neither any Greek traditional instruments involved nor any other eastern strings that would bring a distinctive Mediterranean sound; a rather western and even international approach to the far eastern music of Greece.

All production, from recording to distribution, was undertaken by the band itself, under the supervision of Vasiliki Bogdanou. The release comes from the record label “apo” [από], which was initiated from the band. It is available in 12” vinyl, housed in gatefold sleeve, and CD in eco-pack with 12-page booklet.
